| This directory contains all the BaKoMa Computer Modern fonts in
 | |
| Macintosh TrueType format. These fonts are the same fonts in
 | |
| tex-archive/fonts/cm/ps-type1/bakoma/mrf, except for three minor
 | |
| differences. The first is that the files in the mrf directory are in
 | |
| MacBinary format, while the fonts in this directory are stuffed,
 | |
| binhexed files, a more common format for archived Mac files. The
 | |
| second is that each font in the mrf directory is an individual
 | |
| suitcase with the name *FontName#.mrf, where * is a space or empty
 | |
| character and # is a number (which does not correspond to the font
 | |
| size). In this directory, however, all similarly named fonts were
 | |
| grouped in a suitcase named after that font. For example, all sizes
 | |
| of the Computer Modern Roman fonts are in cmr.mrf.sit.hqx. The third
 | |
| is that the screen font name for each font has been prefixed with a
 | |
| "~". This pushes all the fonts to the bottom of the font menu, so
 | |
| that all your regular fonts remain more accessible at the top. It is
 | |
| also possible to remove some or all the BaKoMa fonts from the font
 | |
| menu by replacing the "~" with a "%". See the section on hidden fonts
 | |
| below for more details. After de-binhexing and unstuffing, all the
 | |
| Computer Modern Roman fonts will be in the cmr.mrf suitcase. (Trivial
 | |
| note: I believe mrf stands for Macintosh Resource Format.) The fonts
 | |
| in the mrf directory were created by Basil K. Malyshev using Font
 | |
| Monger.
 | |
|
 | |
| To use these fonts on a Macintosh, just drop them into your System
 | |
| Folder under System 7.x, at which point the system will put them where
 | |
| they belong. They should appear in an applications's Font menu like
 | |
| any other font and should print on either PostScript or non-PostScript
 | |
| printers.
 | |
|
 | |
| ATM screen fonts are not currently available for the Computer Modern
 | |
| fonts. If you own Fontographer, Font Monger, or the font utilities
 | |
| from Y&Y, you can create these bitmaps from the AFM and PostScript
 | |
| files. If you do create these screen fonts, please upload them to
 | |
| CTAN so that others can have access to them.
 | |
|
 | |
| No ATM or Mac TrueType screen fonts exist for the AMS fonts, so
 | |
| currently the AMS fonts can only be used for printing. If you have
 | |
| any of the programs listed above, you can create them yourself. If
 | |
| you do, please upload them to CTAN.
 | |
|
 | |
| To use these fonts with OzTeX, see the 00readme.oztex file in
 | |
| tex-archive/fonts/cm/ps-type1/bakoma/mac/oztex.
 | |
|
 | |
| Hidden Fonts
 | |
| ------------
 | |
| You can remove the BaKoMa fonts from the font menu and still use them
 | |
| with OzTeX. However, if you do this no other application, (except
 | |
| possibly Textures), will be able to access these fonts. There are two
 | |
| steps to do this. It is probably best to work on a copy of the
 | |
| TrueType fonts when your using ResEdit.
 | |
| 1. Change the "~" to a "%" in the screen font name in the
 | |
| "Add BaKoMa fonts" file. Do this for any of the fonts
 | |
| you want to hide. For example, the current line for cmr12
 | |
| in the "Add BaKoMa fonts" looks like
 | |
| = cmr12	cmr12 <cmr12 ~cmr12 BaKoMaCM.enc
 | |
| The new line should look like.
 | |
| = cmr12	cmr12 <cmr12 %cmr12 BaKoMaCM.enc
 | |
|
 | |
| 2. Change the "~" to a "%" in the font name in the TrueType
 | |
| screen font using ResEdit.
 | |
| 1. Start ResEdit and open the suitcase containing the font
 | |
| you want. Let's say it's cmr12.
 | |
| 2.	Double click on the FOND resource.
 | |
| 3.	Select but do not open the resource named ~cmr12.
 | |
| 4.	Get Info (ie. type command I).
 | |
| 5. Change the "~" in the name field to a "%".
 | |
| 6. Save and close the field.
 | |
|
 | |
| I determine this trick by examining the Hidden fonts that Blue Sky
 | |
| Research supplies with Textures (The best implementation of TeX on any
 | |
| platform!!!) They credit Constantin Kahn at the University of Hannover
 | |
| for suggesting this technique. By the way, Blue Sky Research research
 | |
| also supplies Computer Modern fonts in Postscript type-1 format with
 | |
| ATM screen fonts. There are two advantages to the Blue Sky fonts.
 | |
| The first is I have heard the print quality is slightly better than
 | |
| the BaKoMa fonts. The second is you do not need both the truetype
 | |
| screen fonts and downloadable postscript files, so they take up less
 | |
| disk space.
 | |
|
 | |
| The BaKoMa fonts in PostScript and TrueType format were originally
 | |
| created by Basil K. Malyshev <malyshev@dxcern.cern.ch>. His original
 | |
| license still applies, which is reprinted below. Please read
 | |
| BaKoMa-CM.fonts and BaKoMa-AMS.fonts in
 | |
| tex-archive/fonts/cm/ps-type1/bakoma for more information.
